St. Baldrick’s Foundation Announces the Second Annual BOO Kids’ Cancer! Halloween Campaign

Supporters Can Raise Awareness about Childhood Cancer During the Month of October

LOS ANGELES (October 11, 2010) – The St. Baldrick’s Foundation, a volunteer-driven charity dedicated to raising money for childhood cancer research, is calling on everyone to spook away ghosts and goblins and once again “BOO Kids’ Cancer!”

Halloween is a much anticipated time of the year for kids (of any age!), but unfortunately, kids with cancer often miss out on the fun Halloween experience. Below are six frighteningly fun activities for supporters to get their BOO on this October, raise awareness and money for life-saving childhood cancer research, and help give Halloween back to the kids.

Spread the BOO stories - Throughout the month of October, the St. Baldrick’s Facebook page and website will highlight stories about parents, nurses, researchers and kids with cancer, sharing what their Halloween will look like, the health concerns they have and the fun traditions they’re looking forward to this year.

Upload the BOO Social Icon - Make the BOO Social Icon your Facebook or Twitter profile picture throughout October to showcase your efforts to BOO away kids’ cancer.

Snap an “It Takes…” Photo - “It takes… a pirate to BOO Kids’ Cancer!” Take a picture of your child, friend, family member or yourself in your favorite Halloween costume holding the “It Takes…” sign and send to SocialMedia@StBaldricks.org. Photos will be posted to the St. Baldrick’s Foundation Flickr site.

Give the BOO Awareness Cards - Pass out the BOO Awareness Cards to all of the ghosts, goblins and guardians who knock on your door, or while trick-or-treating yourself! Inspire others to spread the word and join the fight.

Share the SpBOOking Video - View the playful BOO Video on Vimeo and YouTube to get in the BOO-ing spirit, then share it with others!

Film a letsCONQUER Video - Make a short video (1 minute or less) telling us how your Halloween character would Conquer Kids’ Cancer and send them to SocialMedia@StBaldricks.org. Videos will be posted on the official St. Baldrick’s Vimeo and YouTube sites.

This year, St. Baldrick’s is partnering with Disguise, Friends of Scott Foundation and MADCAPS to BOO Kids’ Cancer! with a private event at Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego, Calif., on Saturday, Oct. 15. The event, co-hosted by Rady Children’s Hospital Hematology/Oncology staff, will host approximately 150 in and out patients from the pediatric oncology unit and their families, along with Rady staff and volunteers. Attendees will partake in a special day of Halloween fun and games - all while dressed in costume!

About the St. Baldrick’s Foundation
The St. Baldrick’s Foundation is a volunteer-driven charity committed to funding the most promising research to find cures for childhood cancers and give survivors long and healthy lives. The Foundation funds more in childhood cancer research grants than any organization except the U.S. government. St. Baldrick’s funds are granted to some of the most brilliant childhood cancer research experts in the world and to younger professionals who will be the experts of tomorrow. Funds awarded also enable hundreds of local institutions to participate in national pediatric cancer clinical trials, a child’s best hope for a cure. Grants are traditionally awarded twice a year in the months of July and October. Since the Foundation’s first grants as an independent charity in 2005, St. Baldrick’s has funded more than $76 million in childhood cancer research.
